What is a domain name?

A domain name is the essence of your company's online identity. It is the address your customers use to find information about your products and services on the web. Domain names allow Internet users to type in a name, such as getawebsiteonthe.net, to identify a numeric Internet Protocol (IP) address such as 209.152.165.89.  The purpose of domain names is to allow users connected to the Internet the ability to find web sites without having to memorize the long, numerical (IP) addresses that actually locate the computers or servers on the Internet.

What does it mean to "register" a domain name?

There is a central registry of all domain names on the Internet. For your domain name to become a part of the registry, your domain name needs to be added to that registry. "Registering" a domain name means you are associated with that domain name for the period of the registration. Only ICANN approved Registrars (such as our registration partner) have access to this database. "Registering" a name means you own it, and no one else can register that exact same name!

Who should register a domain name?

Anyone thinking about establishing a presence on the Internet should register a domain name. You don't have to utilize it right away, but you can reserve it for your future use. Domains are being registered at the rate of more than 900,000 per month- they go quickly! Once your desired name is taken, it's gone.

Can I register more than one domain name?

Yes. You can register as many domain names as you want. If you sign up with us for your own hosting account for your website, you will need at least one master domain name to set up the account and have your e-mail service work with that domain name. You can also have more than one domain name associated with your hosting account with us, at no additional charge.

If you do not have a hosting account with us,  you can still register additional domain names and have them all 'point' to one url, or many different ones. Our charge to point your domain name to an individual url is just $4.50 per year and you can order this feature from your domain control panel once you have registered your name. You can also have e-mail sent to 'you@each-domain-name-you-register' forwarded to an existing e-mail account at another domain. Our charge to forward your e-mail is just $6.00 per year, which includes forwarding up to 10 different e-mail addresses per domain name. This can also be ordered through your domain control panel.

You can register a domain name for each product or service that you sell and then point them all to your main website, or individual pages within your main website. Some people register domain names using their individual web page's keywords and then submit those to the search engines. There are many different uses for having additional domain names!

How long does the registration process take?

GetAWebsiteOnThe.Net’s application process should take less than two minutes to complete. Using our service, all registrations take place in real time. Once your application has been processed and approved, your name is officially registered.

Is it possible for someone to register my domain name after I have registered it?

No. The availability of  domain names is verified through a central registry system. This system prevents a domain name that is successfully registered from being registered by another person or entity. The GetAWebsiteOnThe.Net registration and processing system updates this central registry in real time.

What does it mean to transfer registrars?

If you already own a domain, you registered it using a domain name registrar. By using our Transfer Registrar tool, you are simply transferring your domain from the registrar you originally registered with and making GetAWebsiteOnThe.Net the registrar of record.

Why would I want to transfer registrars?

When you registered your domain you probably paid up to $70.00 to reserve it. Now that it is coming due, you can save yourself some money by taking advantage of GetAWebsiteOnThe.Net's extremely low transfer prices. In addition, once the transfer is complete, you will be able to easily manage your domain by using our secure online manager.

How much does it cost?

You can transfer your domain from your previous domain registrar to GetAWebsiteOnThe.Net for just $14.95. This will add one year to the original registration term. For example, if your domain is due to expire in 2 months, you can transfer it to GetAWebsiteOnThe.Net for $14.95, and it will then expire in 1 year and 2 months.

Will transferring my domain change my ownership or information?

No. All existing information in your domain record will be preserved. Once the transfer has been completed, you can then use the Domain Management System to change any contact or DNS information you choose. However, you will still retain your original ownership.

How do I change registrars?

  • Click on the "Transfer Domain" button on the left-hand menu.
  • login or set-up your domain manager account with us.
  • Enter the domain name you wish to transfer.
  • The administrative contact listed for the domain name will receive an email from us to approve the transfer request.
  • Upon approval, we request the domain transfer from the current registrar.
  • The current registrar will send an e-mail to the administrative contact listed for the domain to approve the transfer from their registry to ours.
  • Upon approval, and within a few days later, your domain will show up in our control panel and the transfer will have been completed.

Please note: if the admin contact's email address is outdated or not yours, you will not be able to receive the transfer request email. If you cannot receive this e-mail, you therefore cannot confirm it, and thus there will be no transfer. You must update your admin contact's email address with your prior registrar first, before requesting a transfer.

When would I NOT be able to transfer my domain name?

  • If your domain name has already expired.
(you must renew it with your current registrar first before they will allow you to transfer it)
  • If your domain name is in legal dispute.
  • If your domain name is within the 60-day transfer hold period.
(which means you will have to wait two months from when you initially registered your new domain before you can transfer your domain to any other service)
  • If your domain name has less than 2 weeks remaining on your current registration period and you are requesting a transfer only to pay for your next year.
(If the transfer is delayed for some reason, your domain could expire with your current registrar before we could receive the domain and add the additional year to your term) You may, however, renew your domain with your current registrar for one year only and then request a transfer to our service and receive an additional year for just $14.95.

Do I need the optional URL forwarding, e-mail forwarding or DNS services offered in my domain name control panel?

If you have a hosting account with our company, those services are already included with it and don't need to be purchased separately.

If you don't have a hosting account with our company, purchasing these options may be the only way you will be able to receive those services with your domain name.

If you have any other questions, please contact us.
